Hi, Im new on the forum and new on the vw world.
last year I buy this Vw MK1 cabrio imported from Italy free rust in really mint condition, and I stripped all and clean and replace some old stuff.
Its been a long process and still going on, I hope that it will be ready for this summer.

I start with the interior, the carpet and new isolation, so I replace for a new one, also the trim from the doors and lots of small plastics things.

the clock was broken an a half and really bother me to look on the dash so I replaced, very simple (I doesnt tested yet)

I like the look original but still needs a little of pimp so I found those ATS cup wheels and it just look amazing.
maybe needs to lower the suspension a little bit. but lets see when its ready.

Now Im on the mechanical part, I open the transmission to replace 2nd gear synchro and fro change the seals. and rebuild fully the front steering and suspension.
also all the links from the transmission and loooooot of engine parts.

ahhh and cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning the engine bay....

I use oven cleaner Mr mucle , I found in Tokmanni really effective, but also I put metal brush on the driller. At the end I paint with lakka

ok, thanks. I must give it a try.
Only thing about these are corrosion feature that I´m worried about but I think it won´t do any harm if it´s not leaved on surface for a long time.

About lakka u used, just some regular for car paint I assume?

Hi, About the cleaner, yes, you need to clean all the surface Its strong cleaner. Ussualy I clean with degreaser after use oven cleaner.

about the Lakka.... nothing special, I think was Wurth.

Today I was playing with the engine, change timing belt, sparks, painting and water pump, few issues with the pump, I just buy the pump but not the housing (big mistake) was the original, so after 34 years and 85.000 kilometers I cut all the bolts, so now I have to wait until arrives a new one with the housing.
I have some issues with the marks also for the timing belt also, so I make it moving everything independent. I dont understand but the camshaft never was right with the marks....

I have to admit, I'm toyota guy, this is my first VW project, usually I made restorations in Land cruiser.... but its amazing the quality of the German components (in the old time ofcourse) with 34 years old everything was original in this car....

Anyway ... I forgot to mentioned that Im from Chile and I live in Finland for 3 years already, so apologize for not write in suomi.

Your enginebay seems surprisingly clean and fresh, like it´s repainted in some point.
Don´t worry about language, I think that in these days many of enthusiasts that read this forum are frequently reading also foreing forums like vwvortex etc.
Keep on posting, usually it´s like monolog, nobodys giving any comments but they do read.

Thanks... I trying to clean as much as possible, its really lot of work but at the end I will have the rewards .

Btw, enginebay paint its original, the other day I find in the papers the museum register on Italy :)

Hi, the snowflake are on the storage for the moment, not sure what to do with those wheels. They are R14.

Today ended the hibernation and gives the first ride after a loooong time. Needs to calibrate the links for the gearbox ( PLEASE If anybody nows how to do it , I need advises), also needs realigment for the steering. The rest was Ok, just need to reinstall the seats and everything from inside.
I put one small detail on the dashboard that, I think, every Vw needs... The Hula girl...

Again... If someone can give me advise of how to adjust the gearing I really appreciate. I change everything but I didnt mark the splined shaft bar (big mistake) I was yesterday and part of today trying, at the end I can put easily 3 4 5 and R but not so easy 1 and 2

Interior is ready, and finally water pump is on the place, I'm driving already the car and it feels nice the shifting now, just missing the alignament.

Today was a sunny day ,so we went topples for a ride.
I have one small issue, when I disassemble the transmission, I broke the 5 gear, I buy another transmission but wasn't the same ratio ( mine is 0.745 and I put 0.89) the problem is now from 4th to 5th its the same ( my 4th is 0.91), I don't found the gear yet so if anybody had one 020 4T on sale please send me a message
What I use was the 5th of one 020 9A

Finally I found the right gear for the 5th.
Also I order new seals for outside windows, small details make the difference, it change a lot with the new ones.
Lets hope that at this weekend I get time to install the new 5th gear.

And I didn't want to wait until weekend so after work I came home decided to change the gear, after 4 hours was in place and tested, finally I have a real 5th gear.
The best part was that I didn't need to remove the hole transmission
The only mistake, was that I didn't disconnect the speedometer cable and pulled out from the gauge so I need to reconnect that

Today I just get the spring to lower a bit the suspension, so let's see if today night I start the installation.

Finally I got the time to install the suspension.
It looks just awesome, just what I was looking.
Tires are touching a little bit on the rear so I have to found a solution for that, but meanwhile I can drive and enjoy the car just like that

I ordered few plastic parts from inside and also for the soft top and also buy a cover to keep it warm on winter time :D
